Tibetan Prayer Wheel

8"L Brass

Tibetan Prayer Wheels (Mani) are objects for spreading and acquiring spiritual blessings and a sense of general well being.

Rolls of thin paper, imprinted with hundreds sometimes thousands of copies of the mantra (prayer) "Om Mani Padme Hum", printed in an ancient Indian script, are wound around an axle in a protective container, and spun around and around.

The wheel must not be spun too fast, the object is to keep a steady pace and not be frantic. You must hold the Prayer Wheel upright and turn it in a smooth manner "with the motivation and spirit of compassion and bodhichitta" (the noble mind that aspires to full enlightenment for the benefit of all beings). Not to mention, if you spin it too fast, it will fly apart.
